After postponing for months and always finding an excuse not to go, I finally went Skydiving on the weekend with a group of 8 friends. We chose a company located in Wyong, about one hour and 30 minutes north of Sydney.
We got to the drop zone around 1pm, checked in, filled in all the insurance forms, and that was when our hearts started racing… Looking around at all the other people about to jump we could recognise the same nervous look we probably had on our faces.
I met the instructor who would be holding, instructing and assisting me for our jump – he gave me confidence I would land in one piece!
I have been told this is a once in a lifetime experience –why?? It was sensational and I can see why people take it up professionally and come back many times. The feeling of exhilaration is indescribable, amazing and the sense of freedom is awesome.
Surprisingly, you don’t actually feel like your falling, so you don’t get that roller coaster feeling in your stomach. It is more like when you stick your hand out of a moving car, just way faster than that ;-).
It is so fast that after 20 to 40 seconds I jumped out of the plane, it was already time to pull the parachute. I pulled mine, which was a great experience, my instructor was really nice. And then the speed dramatically decreased and all of a sudden it was extremely quiet, and entirely peaceful. Quiet, because you’re likely moving with the wind so it appears you are just floating. Peaceful because you’re now quite safe and relieved, and the view from there is incredible.
Of course it is not inexpensive though and in fact Skydiving is one of the most expensive sports about. As you can understand…taking off and then landing planes after 15 min costs a bit!
After landing there are photos, videos and t-shirts to be had and you can keep your sky diving memories forever!
To be honest though, I seriously cannot wait to go skydiving again.
