A recent Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) data reveals Australia is in fact the fifth-lowest taxed nation of the 34 OECD member countries. (Statistics are taken from 2012 or the latest available year.)
The study was based on tax revenue as a % of national GDP.
Some of the results are Mexico lowest taxed (19.6%), USA 3rd lowest (24.3%) and Australia 5th lowest at 26.5%. Higher taxed nations include Canada (30.7%), Britain (35.2%) and Denmark (48%) the highest taxed. The average across all OECD countries is 34.6%.
Interestingly Denmark, Sweden and Norway some of the highest taxed nations in the world consistently rank highly in standard of living rankings.
